A Screen-Free Science Week For The September Holidays

Nine days off, no timetable, and by Monday morning the tablet has been asked for twice. Sound familiar? The September break is short enough that nobody bothers to plan it, and long enough that the days vanish anyway.
What follows is a gentle week of Science for children in Primary 1 to Primary 4, built entirely from things already in the kitchen, the corridor and the park downstairs. Each activity takes about twenty minutes, needs no special kit, and leaves behind a question to argue about at dinner. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has set this year's break from Saturday 5 September to Sunday 13 September, which leaves room for one activity a day and plenty of time left over for doing absolutely nothing.
The Week At A Glance
Five short activities, one for each weekday, with both weekends left alone. Families who want something bigger sometimes pair a couple of quiet days at home with a Science holiday workshop, where the equipment-heavy experiments are far easier to run than in a flat. Listings rotate through the year, so do check what is on before planning a week around one.

Monday: The Ice Cube Race
Two ice cubes, two saucers. One cube gets wrapped in a dry tea towel, the other sits bare beside it. Ask your child which will melt first and, far more usefully, why. Then leave both on the counter and check every ten minutes.
Most children predict that the wrapped cube melts faster, because a towel feels warm. What they find is the opposite, and the surprise is the entire point. The towel slows heat from the room reaching the ice. A question for dinner: why do we wrap a hot drink in a sleeve, when the sleeve is not warm on its own?
Tuesday: Waterproof Or Not
Line up four squares of different material over four cups: kitchen paper, a plastic bag, aluminium foil and a piece of old cotton cloth. A teaspoon of water goes on each. Which let the water through, which held it, and which held it for a while and then gave up? Ask your child to predict the order before testing, and afterwards to name something at home made from the winning material. Nothing sharp, nothing hot, and the whole thing is cleared away in five minutes. Older children in Primary 3 or Primary 4 can push it further by timing how long each material holds out, then writing a single sentence comparing the fastest with the slowest, which is very close to what an examination answer asks for.
Wednesday: A Walk With A Notebook
Take a notebook and a pencil to the park or the block downstairs, and set a target of six different leaves. Not six leaves, six different ones. The hunt turns a walk into a sorting exercise, with edges, veins and the way a leaf sits on its stem all turning into things to argue about.
Children who take to this can be pointed towards Science Centre Singapore for a rainy afternoon, or a public library for a stack of books on whatever they came home asking about. Careful observation sits underneath a great many Science questions in the years ahead, and it grows through exactly this kind of pottering about, at the age when everything outdoors is still interesting.
Thursday: Seeds On The Windowsill
Green bean seeds, damp cotton wool and two clear cups. One cup goes on the windowsill, the other into a dark cupboard, and both get the same small amount of water each day. Your child checks them every morning and draws what they see, which quietly builds the habit of recording instead of remembering. By the time school restarts there will be a real difference to talk about, and the drawings become the evidence for it. Hands get washed afterwards, and nothing here goes anywhere near a mouth.
Friday: Sorting The Recycling
Tip the recycling onto newspaper and sort it into metal, plastic, paper and glass. Rinse anything sticky beforehand, and set aside anything with a sharp edge before your child starts, which is a job for an adult and takes a minute.
Then ask the harder question. Why is a drink can made of metal while a drink bottle is made of plastic? Answers about weight, cost, keeping the fizz in and being easy to squash are all heading in the right direction, and they are precisely the sort of reasoning that Science papers ask for later on, dressed up in longer words.
Keeping It Light
None of this needs a printout or a marking scheme. Twenty minutes, one good question and a bit of mess is the whole recipe, and parents looking for more ways to engage kids with learning Science at home will find the same principle underneath: a child who predicts and then checks is doing Science, whether or not anybody calls it that.

Conclusion
A break with five small experiments in it feels longer and rather better than a break spent negotiating over screens, and it costs nothing beyond what is already in the kitchen drawer. The questions your child asks afterwards are the part that lasts into Term IV.
