How To Manage Your Time In The 2026 PSLE Science Paper

For a P6 family, the last stretch before the PSLE Science paper rarely feels calm. The final revision list is either much too long or suspiciously short, the school prelim result is fresher in the memory than anyone would like, and the walk to the exam hall on the morning of Tuesday, 29 September is only a few weeks away. Marks are almost always still there to be won, but they tend to be won by a child who paces themselves well, not by a child who knows one more fact.
Timing is the one factor that a P6 pupil can control in the exam hall. This piece sets out how the paper is structured, where pupils typically lose minutes they cannot afford, and a small set of habits you can help your child build at home before the paper. Regular exposure through school lessons and any dedicated PSLE science tuition the family has arranged only accelerates those habits.
What The Paper Actually Looks Like
Before pacing can make sense, the shape of the paper has to be clear. The PSLE Standard Science paper runs for 1 hour 45 minutes and carries 100 marks in total, split across two booklets according to the SEAB 2026 syllabus document. Booklet A contains 30 multiple-choice questions with four options each, carrying 2 marks each, adding up to 60 marks. Booklet B has 10 to 11 structured questions carrying 2, 3, 4 or 5 marks each, adding up to 40 marks.
That shape carries a small but important implication. Booklet A is 60% of the marks, and it is meant to be moved through steadily. Booklet B is 40% of the marks, and it is where careful reading, working, and phrasing earn their keep. Every extra minute spent second-guessing a multiple-choice item is a minute stolen from a five-mark open-ended question later.
A Sensible Time Budget
There is no official time-split for the two booklets, and every child needs a small adjustment to whatever you plan. A reasonable working target is around 45 minutes on Booklet A, around 55 minutes on Booklet B, and a five-minute check at the end. That gives roughly 90 seconds per multiple-choice question, and about five to six minutes on average for a Booklet B question, with more on the higher-mark items.
The point of a budget like this is not to hit each number exactly. It is to notice when a question has already taken too long. A useful signal for a P6 pupil is the wall clock. If they hit the half-hour mark and are still on question 15 of Booklet A, they are behind pace and should mark the difficult items with a pencil dot and move on.
Where P6 Pupils Actually Lose Time
Over the years, the same pacing traps come up again and again in Science, and they are all fixable at home. The pattern to watch for is:
Getting stuck on one hard multiple-choice question early, and losing five minutes to a two-mark item
Writing long, storybook-style answers to a two-mark structured question that only wanted a single cause and effect
Rereading the same question three times without underlining the actual command word
Leaving Booklet B open-ended parts blank because time ran out at the back of the paper
Only one of these is about knowing the science. The other three are about habits. Which is good news for a parent, because habits shift with practice much faster than concepts do.
Read The Command Word First
Every structured question in Booklet B has a command word that tells your child what answer the marker expects. State asks for a fact. Explain asks for the underlying reason. Describe asks for what happens. Suggest asks for a plausible reason based on the information given, not necessarily one from the textbook.
Encourage your child to circle the command word before reading the rest of the question. A one-second habit that stops a paragraph-long answer being written to a one-word question. When they practise past papers at home, ask them to read the command word aloud, then the question, then the answer they intend to give, in that order. If any of the three does not match the others, the answer needs a rewrite before they touch the paper.

The Two-Pass Approach
A quiet trick that helps many P6 pupils in the Science paper is to move through each booklet in two passes. The first pass is fast: answer everything that is obvious, skip anything that needs a second thought, and mark those skipped questions with a small pencil dot. The second pass returns to the dots with fresh eyes and whatever minutes are left in the budget.
Two things happen when a pupil works this way. Later questions sometimes remind them of a fact needed for an earlier one. And the pressure that builds up while staring at a stubborn question quietly drops when they move on and come back. Practising this pacing at home during the September holiday, on a timed past paper twice a week, is a small commitment that pays back in the exam hall.
Save Five Minutes For Checking
The five-minute check at the end is genuinely useful, and most P6 pupils do not use it well. Reading every answer again from the start is not a check. What works better is a short, targeted sweep for the two or three things a child is known to slip on. That might be a missed unit, a graph reading in the wrong direction, or a Booklet A question where two options were both circled and one needs to be erased.
Ask your child to write their own three-line checklist on the front of their revision notebook the week before the paper, and to practise using it under timed conditions. Their list will be different from any other child's, and that is exactly the point. A checklist that names their errors beats a generic one every time.
